Standard Life Reveals University Debt Headache For Parents

Standard Life has revealed that more than half of parents potentially underestimate the maximum amount of debt their child could leave university with.

When asked to take into account the increase in tuition fees to a maximum of £9,000 per year from 2012, and any other debts accumulated from living expenses, student loans, bank loans etc. 58 per cent of parents think the maximum debt their children could leave with is £40,000 or under, including many who think this would be a lot less. This total is well under the maximum figure of £54,000 calculated by the long-term savings and investment company Standard Life.

Despite this, a fifth (21 per cent) of parents have started to make regular savings to help ease the costs of their children’s university education, and nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of parents are putting money aside on special occasions (e.g. birthdays or one-off windfalls).

Julie Hutchison, head of technical insight at Standard Life, said: “The findings of our research are positive as they show that parents have identified the need to save for their children’s time at university. Unfortunately their expectations of what that cost could be and therefore the target amount they want to save might actually be too low.”

Parents who have longer to save are taking full advantage, as more than half of parents (55 per cent) with children aged 0 to 9 are putting money aside for their child’s university costs. Conversely seven out of ten (70 per cent) parents with children aged 14 to 17 aren’t doing the same.

Julie continued: “Attending University is of course a worthwhile pursuit but can be expensive with the costs of tuition fees, living costs and course material all adding up over the years. Even though a student loan can be taken to cover all these outgoings, parents can also seriously help reduce these costs.”

More than half (53 per cent) of parents who save on a regular basis are saving less than £50 a month towards their child’s university costs, 27% are saving £50 – £100, 7 per cent are saving £101 – £200 and 4 per cent of parents are saving more than £200.

Out of the 56 per cent of parents who are not saving for their children’s university costs, almost two-thirds (63 per cent) say they can’t afford to at the moment, with one in ten (10 per cent) having just not considered it.

The research also looked at the saving attitudes of grandparents of children under 18, with one in ten (9 per cent) saving for their grandchildren’s university education on a regular basis, 16 per cent on occasions and 2 per cent as a one-off lump sum. Of those not saving, a quarter (24 per cent) have just not considered it, with 15 per cent thinking the child’s parents are saving up sufficient funds.

Regionally parents in the Midlands are saving the most with 52 per cent putting money aside for their children’s university costs. It’s followed by London (48 per cent), Scotland (44 per cent), Southern England and East of England (both 42 per cent) with the North of England saving the least (39 per cent).

Confused.com Finds 1 In 3 Young People Are More Likely To Date A Car Owner

Confused.com has revealed the results of a new survey that shows many young adults feel that owning a car helps to get a date. More than 1 in 3 young adults (34%) feel that young people who can drive and have a car are sexier than non-drivers, and more likely to get a boyfriend/girlfriend.

More than 1 in 3 (35%) told Confused.com that having a car and being able to drive will improve the chances of getting a date. It doesn’t matter too much what kind of car it is though; only 12% of young adults admit to dating someone because of the car they drive with the majority (65%) say that it’s ‘really shallow’ to date someone because of the car they drive.

Well over 1 in 3 young adults (40%) told Confused.com that they felt getting a boyfriend or girlfriend is more likely for those who have a car and can drive, while 12% think that the better the car, the better love life you have. Women are more likely than men to look for a partner who can drive, with 39% of 17-25 year olds saying they are more likely to date a driver than a non-driver, compared to just 24% of young men. 1 in 2 young men (51%) think that they are more likely to get a girlfriend or boyfriend if they have a car, compared to just 36% of young women.

When it comes to making love, 18% of young men think that the better car you drive, the better love life you have, while only 9% of women surveyed think this is true.

The cost of driving and insurance costs are the highest barriers among young people wanting to get behind the wheel; higher even than the cost of buying the car. Other common barriers, as rated by 17-25 year olds in the UK include passing the driving test, the cost of petrol and fees associated with learning to drive.

Prudential Reports Pensioners Set To Lose £2.9 Billion Of Spending Power Over Next 12 Months

Prudential has reported that pensioners in the UK with additional savings held in cash ISAs, savings accounts and current accounts could see their spending power fall by an average of £278 each in the next 12 months, according to new analysis. The calculations show that the combined effects of increased inflation and low interest rates will erode pensioner buying power by a total of £2.9 billion in the coming year.

Pensioners are seeing their cost of living rise 44 per cent faster than the current rate of inflation. This is because a greater proportion of their income is spent on goods and services with prices that are rising ahead of inflation, like fuel and food.

The average pensioner has £19,664 in additional savings, but is likely to see their purchasing power fall considerably as the gap between the interest rates paid on savings and the rate of Silver RPI eats into the value of cash nest eggs in real terms.

According to recent research by Age UK, the average annual inflation recorded by the Retail Prices Index (RPI) has been 3.1 per cent in the period since January 2008. Silver RPI over the same period has averaged 4.6 per cent – resulting in an annual rate of inflation for pensioners that is nearly 50 per cent higher.

Vince Smith Hughes, Head of Business Development at Prudential, said: “Low interest rates and rising Silver RPI mean that many pensioners are particularly feeling the squeeze, and for those who rely on interest paying savings accounts to top up their income the challenge is even greater.

“As most people in Britain feel the financial pressure of rising living costs, pensioners on fixed retirement incomes are facing even higher levels of inflation and are suffering disproportionately.

“We strongly encourage people to speak to a financial adviser to ensure they are making the best use of income-generating investments, bonds and pension funds where relevant, in order to ensure their income has the potential to rise and combat increasing inflation and living costs.”

Northern Rock Reduces Mortgage Rates by Up to 0.90%

Northern Rock has reduced rates across its mortgage range by up to 0.90% and extended its £500 cash back incentive to include all Buy to Let (BTL) products with percentage fees.

Northern Rock’s 2-Year Everyday fixed rates with a £995 product fee now start from 2.67% for purchase and re-mortgage customers with a 30% deposit (70% LTV), a reduction of 0.32%. For those who wish to keep their costs as low as possible however, 2-year Everyday fixed rates with no product fees, start from 3.19% at 70% LTV.

Northern Rock remains committed to assisting those with smaller deposits, including First Time Buyers. It has therefore reduced selected mortgage rates across its products at 80% LTV (20% deposit required), 85% LTV (15% deposit required) and 90% LTV (10% deposit required). A 2-Year Everyday fixed rate mortgage at 90% LTV exclusively for purchase customers, is now available from just 5.25% with a £995 product fee. Customers will also qualify for £500 cash back. Or for those who choose our Fee Saver Option, the same term is available at just 5.45%.

Following demand from BTL customers who welcomed Northern Rock’s recent limited period offer of £750 cash back across the BTL range, the lender has also extended its £500 cash back incentive on selected residential products, to include all BTL products with a percentage fee.

Selected fixed rates in the Intermediary Exclusive range of mortgage products have also been reduced by up to 0.30%.

Everyday mortgages offer customers simple, straightforward mortgage deals with competitive rates and the ability to make overpayments of up to 10% each year, as well as the option to apply for payment holidays. Northern Rock launches new fixed rate e-ISAs

Northern Rock has launched three new online issues of its fixed rate cash e-ISA to complement its competitive portfolio of internet-based savings accounts.

e-ISA offers those who prefer to operate their accounts via the internet an online option for their tax-free* savings. e-ISA is a cash ISA set at a competitive fixed rate of interest over a choice of one, two or three years and can be opened with no minimum initial deposit.

Interest, which can be added to the account or paid into another account, is paid annually on the first business day following 5th August on minimum balances of £500 (balances which fall below this amount will earn Northern Rock’s prevailing rate of interest, 0.10% tax free* pa /AER**).

Strictly limited issues, the fixed rate cash e-ISAs (issues 19, 20 and 21) allow transfers in from other providers and additional deposits can be made to the cash ISAs, within HM Revenue and Customs limits (£5,340 per tax-year from 6 April 2011) up to 30 days after the product is withdrawn (excepting postal applications to transfer in from other banks and building society ISA accounts, which must be received while the product remains on sale).

To guarantee funds are accepted into a new account, Northern Rock advises all funds to be deposited within 30 days from the account opening date. Any deposits received after 30 days may be returned to customers. This includes any funds transferred in from an existing cash ISA, therefore customers should ensure that they initiate any Cash ISA transfers in as soon as they receive their new Cash ISA details. Subscriptions are not allowed to any other Cash ISAs in the same tax year(s) that customers subscribe to this Cash ISA, even if they have not used your full annual allowances(s).

30 days following the products withdrawal, no further deposits will be accepted and all three issues may be withdrawn without notice once fully subscribed.

Minimum withdrawals of £1 by BACS and £250 by CHAPS can be made from the account, subject to a charge equivalent to 60 days’ loss of interest on the amount withdrawn (Issue 19), 90 days’ loss of interest on the amount withdrawn (Issue 20), or 120 days’ loss of interest on the amount withdrawn (Issue 21). There is a £35 fee for transfers out via CHAPS.

Confused.com Reveals the Vehicles Most Likely to be Stolen in the UK

Confused.com has revealed the UK’s most frequently stolen vehicles and has teamed up with Michael Fraser, an ex-burglar, to help drivers keep their vehicles from being stolen.

The least stolen car, based on Confused.com’s customer data, is the Ford Ka3 with no incidences of theft among 9,070 owners between 2004-2011. The Toyota Yaris is the number one most stolen car with a 0.41% incidence of theft. This means that car thieves drive off with approximately one in every 244 Toyota Yaris’. Data looking at claims from 2004-2011 showed experts at Confused.com that after the Toyota Yaris, The Volkswagen Touareg (0.39%) (1 in 256); Volvo XC90 (0.27%) (1 in 370); Porsche 911 (0.24%) (1 in 417) and Seat Altea (0.23%) (1 in 435) are the next most stolen cars.

The least stolen cars based on Confused.com’s customer data is the Ford Ka3 followed by the Chevrolet Matiz, Suzuki Ignis, Hyundai I10 Comfort and Nissan Skyline which all have tiny theft rates of 0.02% (1 in 5000) or less.

Homeowners Could Benefit From Latest Fixed-Rate Deals

Now could be a good time to find a new fixed-rate mortgage deal, according to financial solutions company Think Money.

With rates on many fixed-rate deals recently falling – and with uncertainty over when the base rate could rise – fixed-rate mortgages could become an increasingly attractive option for homeowners.

In July, Yorkshire Building Society cut the rate on its best five-year fixed-rate deal to a market-leading 3.49%, with an arrangement fee of £995. Borrowers who don’t want to pay this much up front can get a rate of 3.69% with a £95 arrangement fee.

According to Moneysupermarket, the best five-year fixed-rate deals before this offered rates of 3.79% (Chelsea Building Society) and 3.89% (Nationwide). Even those deals carried lower rates than many of the two-year deals available only a few months earlier.

The recent fall in the interest rates available may reflect intensifying competition between mortgage lenders, says an expert at Think Money.

“Many economists now believe we won’t see an increase in the base rate until late next year, which may have made some mortgage lenders more relaxed about offering lower interest rates. The fact that some of today’s five-year deals offer better rates than some of the two-year deals available a few months ago suggests that mortgage providers are serious about their lending.

“This could make five-year fixed-rate deals a very attractive option for many homeowners. Only a few months ago, such low rates over such a long period would have been unthinkable.

“However, it is worth remembering that tracker mortgage deals still tend to offer lower rates than fixed-rate deals at any given time – so some borrowers may prefer to go down that route instead.”

“Ultimately, the right mortgage deal depends on the borrower’s circumstances – and as such it’s often a good idea to seek advice before they make a decision.”

Lower rates mean lower monthly payments for homeowners. Furthermore, it could reduce costs for those considering borrowing more on their mortgage for other purposes, such as debt consolidation.

“Consolidating debts into a mortgage can greatly reduce the month-to-month cost of repaying those debts, because they are essentially spread over the entire duration of the mortgage. And when mortgage rates are low, this could prove to be a very cost-effective way of dealing with debt.

“However, we advise anyone considering doing this to think carefully, as it will increase the size of the borrower’s mortgage. Furthermore, taking longer to repay the debt may mean the total cost is higher in the long run, and if for any reason they can’t keep up with their payments, they may risk losing their home. But as long as the borrower is sure they can keep up, it could make very good financial sense.”

Northern Rock Launches Second Annual Branch Contest For Kids

Northern Rock is helping to keep kids entertained this summer holidays by holding a nationwide competition.

The contest, which started on the first day of the school break, focuses on the theme of superheroes in an effort to spark kids’ imaginations, and all of Northern Rock’s 74 branches are taking part.

For a chance at winning £100 in High Street vouchers, children have the option to draw their own superhero, colour in a template design supplied by Northern Rock, or dress up as a superhero and send a photograph of themselves in costume to their local branch.

The competition is split into three age categories – up to four years, five to nine years and ten to 16 years of age. An independent representative at each branch will choose a winner from each age group, each of whom will win a High Street voucher worth £25. All branch winners will then progress to the national judging and their chance to win a High Street voucher worth £100.

To enter, interested parties can visit any of Northern Rock’s branches and pick up an entry form, which can either be completed in branch or taken away and returned no later than 3rd September 2011. All winners will be notified by 24 October 2011. Full terms and conditions are available in branches.

Launched in April last year, the Little Rock’s top-paying access account at 3.00% gross* pa/AER**, is available through Northern Rock’s branch network, and by post, to customers aged under 16. It must be opened with an appropriate adult named on the account as a trustee.

Little Rock can be opened by cash, cheque or by transfer from an existing Northern Rock account. There is a maximum balance limit of £10,000, and all trustees are required to sign for any withdrawals. All withdrawals are notice free.

Confused.com Poll Reveals UK Drivers Want a Crackdown on Drug Driving

A new poll from Confused.com reveals that ‘Crack down on drug driving’ is the message from drivers to the UK government. 70% of drivers say they don’t think enough is being done about this problem and 71% want to see the government do more to combat drug driving.

25-34 year olds are most likely to drive while on drugs (8% admit to having done it), according to the Confused.com poll, while drink driving is most likely among 45-54 year-olds (34% admit to having done it).

The ‘drug and drink driving’ poll of 2,000 drivers in the UK reveals 37% of drivers think drug drivers are less likely to get caught than drink drivers (8% say more likely and 55% see no difference). Meanwhile, 25% of men and 18% of women believe drug driving is more widespread than drink driving on UK roads despite figures showing 5% of drivers admit to drug driving and 28% of drivers admit to drink driving. Moreover, more men admit to drink driving than women (38% as opposed to 19%). Most notably, the poll reveals 77% of women want to see the government do more about drug driving, compared to 65% of men.

The Department for Transport reported a fall in alcohol-related accidents last week. Mike Hoban, Chief Marketing Officer for Confused.com, thinks that drug driving might be a hidden menace on our roads. He said: “The Government has been boasting about cutting public service advertising but it’s clear that people are concerned about the potential dangers of drug-driving. The Government has a responsibility to let drivers know that the penalties are severe and that drug-drivers are a danger to themselves and a danger to others.”

The penalties for drug driving are the same as for drink driving: a drug driver will receive a minimum 12-month driving ban, a criminal record and a fine of up to £5000.

The conviction for driving (or attempting to) when unfit through drugs is DR80 and this stays on the driver’s license for 11 years (attracting up to 11 points). DR90 is the conviction for being in charge of a vehicle when unfit through drugs. This stays on licenses for 4 years and can attract 10 points.

Standard Life Reveals Brits Tend To Miss Bargain Investments

Standard Life has found that the majority of UK consumers can spot a good deal when it comes to a holiday, but are likely to miss out on a good deal when it comes to their finances.

In a UK wide consumer poll and prize draw in which 8,500 people took part Standard Life found that almost seven out of ten (70%) people would choose a holiday of a lifetime worth £5,000 even if they had to wait five years, rather than settle on a luxury short break this year worth £640*. £5,000 is how much a pension could be worth if £640 was invested into a pension plan each year for the next five years**.

The poll and prize draw, run by long term savings and investment provider Standard Life, highlighted that the UK public know how to spot a good deal when offered one and are willing to wait five years to make their holiday dreams come true. But this savvy forward looking culture is yet to filter through into finances, with almost half (45%) of Brits planning just one to 12 months ahead and a further one in six (17%) failing to make any financial plans at all, according to Standard Life’s research***.

Standard Life’s John Lawson said: “Consumers are keen to spot a good deal which is why voucher codes and group buying websites have become so popular. But many only apply this bargain hunt culture when buying goods, not when it comes to their financial planning. Consumers who take a short term view to their personal finances are likely to miss out on long term tax efficient products that offer far greater benefits than your standard savings account. For example, if you’re a lower rate tax payer and pay into a pension, the government gives you 20% extra on top straight
away in tax relief. That means a pension contribution of £100 a month is instantly worth £125 a month. People’s great bargain hunting skills are being wasted if they are not picking out these great investment deals.”

New System Means Faster Loans For Payday Express Customers

Confused.com Finds £4,000 Average Annual Car Insurance Cost For Young Drivers

Confused.com has revealed that car insurance costs for 17-20 year olds have crashed through the £4,000 barrier, with the average 17-20 year old male now paying a staggering £4,006 per year for comprehensive cover.

This is the first time since the Confused.com/Towers Watson Car Insurance Price Index began in 2006 that average annual car insurance costs for young men have exceeded £4,000.

Bizarrely, young driver car insurance costs for males were around £1,000 lower if the driver is married and adds their partner to the policy.”

In order to afford a £4,000 a year premium and cover the cost of running a car, the average single male would need to spend £6,500 a year – almost half of the average salary of full-time employees at this age. This effectively prices them out of the market.

Our consumer research shows that 50% of under 25s could save up to £556 on car insurance* by using Confused.com. This is one way to help combat these rises.”

The news isn’t only bad for young drivers though. The average cost of a comprehensive car insurance policy across the UK stands at £858 (as of the end of June 2011), marking a year on year rise of £170.

Despite the huge increase in the last twelve months, prices are still continuing to rise. In Q2 of 2011, prices inflated by an average of 25% compared to Q2 2010.

Confused.com Reveals Over A Quarter Of UK Motorists Have A Pet Name For Their Car

Confused.com has revealed new research that shows 33% of car owners initiate a daily car-versation with their motors, talking to them not only about day-to-day matters and their frustrations on the road, but also about relationships and personal problems.

The average UK motorist considers their car to be female, with a personality that is sensible (25%), cute (8%) or playful (7%). Findings also confirm that 16% of men see their cars as women, choosing words such as sexy (6%) and mischievous (5%) to describe the personality of their vehicles.

Peter Collett, Psychologist and author of ‘Driving Passion – The Psychology of The Car’ suggests that naming your car can reduce the risk of incidents on the road.

“A majority of car owners feel the need to give their car a distinctive name, usually an affectionate title that expresses how they feel about their car and how they regard it as being different from everyone else’s. The drive to individualise one’s car in this way is very widespread and it also lays the foundation for how people treat their cars. By giving their car a special name, drivers are treating their car as something that deserves to be cared for – a friend, a pet, a companion, sometimes even a lover.”

So, to encourage the nation to care for its cars, Confused.com has developed an online car name generator, which automatically generates a name for the user’s car. Customers simply answer a few questions about their motor such as colour, personality, number of years of ownership to generate a name. User’s will also be able to print out a certificate, which can be kept with vehicle documents or passed on to the next owner.

We have nicknames for our friends, partners and even pets so why not our cars. Drivers with an emotional attachment to their vehicles are more likely to take better care of it on and off the road. Additional findings from the survey also uncovered a variety of unusual pet names for cars including Albie the great, Baldrick, Claris, Elektra, Lemmy, Michaelangelo, Snoop, Talulah, Florence (the machine) Horatio, Fadgehammer and Yannis.

Northern Rock has launched a new range of mortgages which offer cashback on completion in order to help customers cover the costs associated with moving home or taking a new mortgage.

The range has been designed to appeal to a wide variety of customers and whether they are setting up home for the first time, moving up the property ladder or even becoming a landlord, a cash incentive is likely to be appreciated. With up to £750 Cashback on completion*, the new incentive is available on selected residential and Buy to Let mortgages.

Northern Rock is committed to helping people buy their first or next home. The Company understands that it is an expensive time and wants to help as much as possible. That is why it is offering £500 Cashback on selected residential Everyday fixed rates at 80% LTV, 85% LTV and 90% LTV. The lender has also reduced interest rates on some of these deals by up to 0.30%.

For a limited time only, £750 Cashback is available on all Northern Rock Buy to Let mortgages. The range includes two, three and five year products up to 70% LTV with flat fees, percentage fees and fee free options available.

Northern Rock has also made improvements to its mortgage porting policy following feedback from customers and intermediaries. All new customers completing a mortgage from 25th July 2011 will be able to port their existing mortgage balance or a reduced balance (subject to any applicable ERC if a customer chooses to reduce their balance), and if they need additional borrowing to purchase their next property they will be able to apply for a new product for the additional amount on the terms of the purchase product range available at that time.

Northern Rock has also reduced rates on its 2-Year Everyday Tracker with a £995 product fee, now available at 2.38% up to 70% LTV, or at 2.48% up to 75% LTV. Both of these deals are available to purchase and remortgage customers.

The recent changes are part of a raft of improvements Northern Rock has made to its mortgage proposition over the course of 2011 to simplify its processes and increase consumer choice.

Prudential Reports Retirement Income Worries And Lump Sum Regrets For Pensioners

Prudential has conducted new research that shows more than two in five pensioners (43 per cent) say they are living a ‘cautious’ retirement as they worry about having sufficient long-term income to get by.

However, despite concerns about making their retirement pots last, the majority of pensioners still take a tax-free lump sum from their pensions when they retire. Nearly eight out of 10 (79 per cent) of those drawing a company or private pension in 2011 took a lump sum from their fund at retirement, compared with 76 per cent three years ago.

The research, exploring the retirement reality for pensioners in 2011, also found that one in 10 (10 per cent) of those who did take a tax-free lump sum either said they now regret the decision or that they had not fully understood the long-term impact it would have on their retirement income.

For many, the option to take a lump sum at the point of retirement is the most tax-efficient way to access some of their pension fund. However, the way in which pensioners use the money from their lump sum is often shaped by concerns around long-term pension income.

More than half (52 per cent) of those who had taken a lump sum put some of the money in a savings account and just over a quarter (26 per cent) invested in stocks, shares or investment trusts.

Vince Smith Hughes, Head of Business Development at Prudential, said: “Most people with a company or private pension fund choose to take a tax-free lump sum at retirement, and for many this proves to be the right thing to do. However, some pensioners are beginning to regret the way they used the tax-free cash. The days of buying a shiny new car or going on an once-in-a-lifetime holiday may be gone, to be replaced by making savings and investments with the lump sum to supplement retirement income.

“There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the financial choices that people need to make when they retire. For example, spending the money from a tax-free lump sum and taking a level annuity with the balance of your fund will effectively fix the level of your retirement income – and for some this may provide the stability they need. Others may wish to explore more flexible retirement products that take into account the effects of inflation.

Payday Express Encourages Healthy Competition Among Staff

Employees at short-term loan specialist Payday Express are planning to make interdepartmental sporting events a regular feature, following the success of a football match earlier this month.

Staff from the instant approval payday loans company’s Contact Centre were pitted against members of its Collections team in the friendly clash, which was held at the ground of a local semi-professional squad, Bromley FC, in Kent.

The final score was a 12-7 victory for Contact Centre, with team stars Jamie Clifton and David Herron being named men of the match.

HR Advisor Richard Turner said: “It’s great to see that all who took part can take the competitive edge outside work, but still enjoy it as a great team building exercise. It’s events like this which add to the great working environment at Payday Express.”

Richard also noted that the enthusiastic support of staff spectators appeared to be a factor in Contact Centre’s triumph. The losing team, however, is determined to have its day at a rematch this week – and is hoping to attract a loyal crowd of supporters to rally that of their rivals.

Confused.com Reveal Drivers Are Only Swayed By Price In The Hunt For The Best Car Insurance Deals

Confused.com’s latest survey has found that consumers use price-comparison sites purely because they help slash insurance bills with the minimum of hassle.

More than half of the survey’s 2,600 respondents said that special offers such as cashback or vouchers had absolutely no bearing on their decision to use a comparison site. A further 40 per cent said the only kind of marketing incentive that would appeal to them was some form of discount on their premiums.

Head of car insurance at Confused.com, Gareth Kloet, said: “When it comes to car insurance, consumers aren’t necessarily loyal, so price is key. That’s why using a price comparison site is so important, it gives drivers the opportunity to compare not only price but a range of features. When it came to choosing an insurer, three-quarters of consumers said the only thing that would cause them to switch providers was a cheaper price. Around 15 per cent said they would move to a new company purely because it was a trusted brand, while just 9 per cent said they would switch if the new insurer offered extras such as free breakdown cover.

Unsurprisingly, price was the number one reason respondents gave for using price-comparison sites – more than 90 per cent cited this as a major factor in using these services, and 40 per cent also said they appreciated the fact the sites saved them so much time in their search for the best value cover.

Confused.com Reveals Slow Drivers Are The Biggest Frustration For UK Drivers

Confused.com has released new research which reveals that dawdling drivers are the top cause of irritation for UK drivers. The survey by the car insurance experts shows that over half (60%) of motorists experience an increase in stress levels and a heightened irritability when faced with a vehicle driving slower than the rest of the traffic.

In reaction to these slow drivers, almost half (45%) of motorists risk overtaking, thus increasing the chances of an accident. Research from the Department for Transport also reveals that 143 accidents a year are caused directly by slow drivers or “Sunday drivers” as they are known.

With little to prevent drivers from travelling too slowly, half of British motorists are supporting the idea to introduce the first ever ‘slow speed camera’ to the roads of the UK. The slow speed camera will specifically catch slow motorists, penalising them with a fine for driving slower than the minimum designated speed limit. This has come as a reaction to the fact that although minimum speed limits are enforced on some UK motorways, there are few preventative measures that are used widely.

Gareth Kloet, Head of Car Insurance at Confused.com said: “Slow drivers need to be taken as seriously as motorists caught speeding. Findings confirm they are a constant source of anxiety on UK roads and responsible for a large amount of accidents each year.”

Kloet continued: “We support the introduction of a programme of measures to eliminate this hazard as our research has highlighted that excessively slow driving is a real problem – the government introduced speed cameras and now even a super speed camera so should also consider the same rigour to combat slow driving as it could make a difference and help reduce motorists putting themselves or others at risk.”

The Confused.com car insurance survey’s additional findings also uncovered other solutions for limiting slow drivers. Suggestions included imposing a minimum speed limit on ALL British roads (37%) the introduction of a slow lane (26%), dedicated times for slow drivers to be on the road (15%) and even a warning badge system to be displayed by offending motorists (5%).

Peter Rodger, Chief Examiner from The Institute of Advanced of Motorists (IAM) supports the need for change on Britain’s roads. He said: “All forms of inconsiderate driving need to be tackled. Drivers who are unnecessarily excessively slow lead others to make rash moves.”
